In Owen's time some 2,500 people lived at New Lanark, many from the poorhouses of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Many people visited Lanark at the height of its fame as an example of new philosophy. Nowadays, 200 people live here. The buildings have been carefully renovated and serve as world class educational and tourist attractions.
