'Stanisław Staszic - versatile man of the Polish Enlightenment, outstanding geologist' says the inscription at the bust in the chamber, carved in rock-salt by the miner sculptor Antoni Wyrodek in 1964. Initially the chamber was 50 metres high, and now, after filling in the lower part, it is 36 metres high. Salt was excavated here in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. On the side walls the marks of old mining techniques can be seen.
