San Francisco's characteristic mix of large and small, new and old buildings, is seen well here. It is a product of strong historic preservation policies and building height limits. Demolition of the historic Montgomery Block to build the Transamerica Pyramid was a catalyst for the anti-Manhattanization movement in the 1980's.
