Verrucole Fortress - San Romano in Garfagnana - Lucca, Italy
Tuscany

View of the city walls characterized by battlements. The merlon is the solid vertical section of a medieval embattled architecture or fortification.        The  Verrucole  Fortress is one of the most beautiful examples of a medieval Tuscan castle and a perfectly successful conservative restoration.

The Verrucole Fortress stands imposingly, in a north-east-south-west direction, on the hill of San Romano Garfagnana at the gates of the Orecchiella natural park. Visiting the fortress, we were able to admire the remains of the polygonal tower, an enclosure of walls that delimits it, the remains of various structures, a tunnel leading to the underground casemate, the mighty walls and two bastions, one with a pointed tip, the other at round tip.
Of medieval origin, enhanced in the Renaissance, it was inhabited until the most recent centuries. The Verrucole Fortress is one of the most representative monuments of the system of military fortifications of the Estense Duchy in Garfagnana.
The structure is enhanced by the Archeopark project which involves the reconstruction of life inside the fortress as it was in the past, in the form of an archeopark, in other words a living museum.
We reached the Fortress by walking uphill from the village of Verrucole, those in difficulty can use the modern electric train whose tracks can be seen in the image.
