Mosteiro de São João de Tarouca

Em S. João de Tarouca implantou-se, no século XII, o primeiro mosteiro cisterciense em Portugal. Chamava-se ele de S. João de Barosa e também de S. João de Mondim, como se lê em documentos da época. Os monges claravalenses receberam grande apoio, embora interessado, da burguesia de Tarouca, juntando-se mais tarde as dádivas da nobreza, de tal modo que a igreja se tornou numa espécie de panteão de algumas estirpes e também da gente mais qualificada de Tarouca. D. Afonso Henriques concedeu carta de couto ao mosteiro em 1140, para compensar os frades do auxílio prestado na tomada de Trancoso aos mouros.
