This is the site of McDonnell's Railway Tavern. The siege of the Kelly Gang happened on the other side of the railway tracks, at Ann Jones' Inn. Firework rockets were launched near this tavern to signal to Kelly sympathizers waiting to join the battle. The Kelly Gang planned to derail the police train, but that plan went wrong. The train did not derail and the police arrived in the early hours of the morning. The rockets were mistakingly launched. Fearing the sympathizers would ride into the police battle, Ned Kelly went out and turned them back. He then returned to the siege to rescue the others and was captured.
