美濃油紙傘起源於日據大正年間，民間人士林阿貴、吳振興延請大陸廣東師傅前來傳授製作紙傘技術進而引進美濃。至1960年左右全盛期時，每年出產兩萬把傘。20多年前，洋傘崛起，紙傘沒落。近年由於旅遊觀光業興起和媒體報導，轉型成手工藝品供收藏、觀賞。其中廣進勝油紙傘由於長久以來堅持純傳統手工，搭配藍染技術，成為聞名中外的老字號。
