High Synagogue
Krakow
High Synagogue was a Orthodox Judaism synagogue in Kazimierz, Kraków, Poland. It was called the "high" synagogue for many centuries for the simple reason that it was the tallest synagogue in the neighborhood. It was built in 1556-1563 in a simple Romanesque style with arched windows and exterior buttresses supporting the walls. The sanctuary walls feeature paintings of scenes in Jerusalem, including the "Tomb of the Israelite Kings," "Western Wall," and a handsome pair of lions in the small women's gallery.
