Defense Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in Komarno
Ukraine

Defense Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in Komarno founded in 1656 at the expense of the city magnate who owned N. Ostroróg family. Consecrated in 1658 enabled the author of the project called the architects B. Kapinos and J. Pokorovicha, although both died well before the start of construction. The magnificent architecture of the church of the Nativity is a striking example of the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque. Typically Renaissance elements are framing the main entrance and niches with sculptures and pilasters with the heads of cherubs. At the same time gable facade and windows framing the central characteristic of the Baroque style. The facade is decorated with numerous sculptures of saints and complex white stone carving (assume that participated in the construction of the master, who designed the facade of the church of the Jesuits in Lviv). Defense-related facilities give keyed slits along the perimeter along the eaves. In Ser. XVIII century. next to the church bell tower was built in the form of a triumphal arch. In 1946 the church was closed, part of the church property was taken in Poland. In 1992, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin was transferred to the Greek Catholic community Komarno.
