旗山老街，即美濃區「中山路」，舊稱「蕃薯寮街」，為日治時期開闢的「本通」。老街上除了被指定為歷史建築的「石拱圈亭仔腳」，以石塊堆砌而成的圓拱亭仔腳為主要特色外，多數為紅磚建築搭配文藝復興巴洛克式立面造型。老街附近的建築大多保留著當時建築風格，有平埔族與漢人混居的土埆厝茅屋，閩南式三合院和四合院房舍，加上歐洲都鐸式建築風格的旗山火車站，集台灣古建物之大成，宛如置身建築活標本的廊道。
