The project developed by Francisco Sáenz de Oiza responds to the purpose of simplicity pursued by the architect, concerned with harmonizing the balance between content and continent. An architect's will that affirmed that “the Foundation cannot fall into the contradiction of making a sculpture to contain sculptures. The more elementary and simple it is, the more monumental the sculptures that are offered inside will be. ” The Oteiza Museoa Museum houses the personal collection of the renowned sculptor and integral artist (Orio, 1908-San Sebastián, 2003), composed of 1,650 sculptures, 2,000 pieces from his experimental laboratory, as well as an extensive presence of drawings and collages. The Museum is focused on the dissemination of the legacy of Jorge Oteiza, one of the fundamental sculptors in the evolution of twentieth-century art, the author of a sculptural trajectory founded on aesthetic experimentation based on the emptying of shapes and the emptying of sculpture , in addition to multi-faceted interdisciplinary creator and responsible for numerous contributions in the field of essays, poetry, anthropology, architecture, linguistics and proposals for the socialization of culture and art. The collection that the Oteiza Museum has has 1,690 sculptures, 800 drawings , 2,000 studies of the chalk laboratory, about 5,000 books from his personal library, in addition to his extensive newspaper library and his innumerable writings, in the cataloging phase.
The Alzuza collection has very significant pieces of all the sculptor's creative moments and allows an exhaustive tour through the different sculptural concerns and practices of the artist, closely linked to the evolution of the aesthetic languages of twentieth-century art.
