端午龍舟競渡原是傳統東方節慶活動之一，後來演變朝向現代化、國際化、規範化的競賽活動，更吸引西方國家積極參與，成為國際賽事。端午龍舟競賽向來是高雄觀光重點活動之一，每年吸引數十萬民眾前往參觀，除了歡慶佳節外，也邀請荷蘭、日本、美國等國家之姊妹城市共襄盛舉，一同體驗高雄愛河美麗景觀，進一步帶動高雄觀光休閒產業發展。
