The Columbia River Gorge is the only sea level break in the Cascade mountains between Alaska and Mexico.  The mountains trap rainfall and snow which cascade down off Mt Hood and the entire basalt plateau into the gorge such that virtually every river and creek has multiple drops and falls.  Mulnomah Falls is the iconic scenic attraction representing the hundreds of lesser falls in the area.
