依據台灣縣志記載，內門紫竹寺殿宇在1733年興建，至今三百餘年，歷經多次修建而成為現在的規模。清乾隆七年水師提督吳必達經過此處，見香火鼎盛，堪稱奇景，於是賜匾「紫竹生春」，始正式定名為紫竹寺。該寺群山屏障，頗具靈氣，不但是內門區的信仰中心，也是全省觀音信仰的中心寺廟，每逢重要節日，來自南北各地的香客絡繹不絕。
