The eight mile long Santa Elena Canyon makes is exit from the high cliffs just a few hundred yards downstream from this point high above the river. There is a groomed trail from a parking area to about a half mile up the river on the Texas side. However, when this visit was made much of the lower part of the trail had been washed out. Slippery and rough social trails had been developed at the head of the trail by the frequent travel of many visitors.
From this viewpoint you get can still see the solitude of the canyon up river and the wide open prairie, and the Chisos Mountains in the far distance.
