北宜高工程，歷時十幾年，穿越雪山山脈，被譽為工程奇觀，而這一根根的如石中劍的巨大橋墩，就成了北宜高代表性的工程奇觀之一。導覽解說牌提及，矗立於烏塗溪畔的這根橋墩高達65公尺，是台灣最高的一座橋墩。步道旁橋墩的水泥牆上，有石碇當地藝術家楊敏郎的作品「龍蟠巨石護河川」，並題有「石碇山城聞蛟聲」、「烏塗溪畔指鯉影」等詩句。
