殼牌公司創辦人馬可仕、薩姆耳兄弟，於1878年分別在倫敦、日本成立公司且與英商洋行建立良好合作關係，引進煤油外銷遠東地區，其主要據點均設油槽。1897年英商殼牌公司將石油生產、油輪、貿易倉儲整合，紀念其父販賣貝殼起家，遂命公司名殼牌運輸貿易公司，並買下嘉士洋行為遠東地區貿易一環。
