Diving boats return back to the harbour passing the Island of Tiran in the distance. Tiran Island and its smaller neighbor Sanafir Island officially belong to Saudi Arabia but are being used by Egypt. The island is located at the entrance to the Straits of Tiran, an important sea passage to Israel and Jordan, and is therefore of strategic significance to this area. Only some Egyptian military personnel and members of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) are allowed on the island. Apparently, the island's beaches are heavily mined so the supplies to the military camps arrive by helicopter twice a week.
Tiran is absolutely off limits for any other visitor, also scuba diving on the beautiful fringing reefs around the island is strictly prohibited.
