White Caterthun, Angus
Scotland

The White Caterthun is the more impressive of two ancient iron age forts on adjacent hills overlooking Strathmore. Thought to have been built by the Picts, the mass of rocks would once have stood several metres high, with two walls inside an earthworks enclosure, that likely had a defensive purpose. Despite this, it also had numerous entrances. The fort shows evidence for vitrification, a process in which stones are fused together due to intense heat.
