烏山頂泥火山位於旗山斷層帶上，地底下含有豐富的天然氣和地下水，加上土質為鬆軟的泥岩，天然氣在噴發時混合地下水和泥漿，變成了濃厚的泥流，泥流堆積在噴發口經年累月逐漸形成典型的噴泥錐。行政院農委會於1992年3月依文資法公告此地為「烏山頂泥火山自然保留區」，面積4.89公頃，為全台面積最小的自然保留區，卻也是台灣規模最大、保存最完整的泥火山保存區。
