原六龜區新發大橋於2009年八八風災期間遭大水沖斷，造成當地居民交通不便，出入須繞行近二十公里。因此，中鋼公司挹注5億元經費協助重建，讓新發大橋重新肩負起聯絡六龜區荖濃里與寶來里的重責大任。新穎的新發大橋設計為兩跨連續華倫式桁架鋼橋，綠色的鋼築建材與當地山林景致融合，傳達環境保育的精神，除連結荖濃溪兩岸交通外，新發大橋成為旅客前往溫泉景點的必經之路，以及黑鑽石蓮霧、網室木瓜等農特產品的運輸要道，活絡當地觀光產業發展。
