月光山是美濃山系的最高主山，標高 649公尺，因山頂弧度如初月形而得名。月光山隧道座落在雙峰山西側的山腳，於西元1998年動土興建，2002年 2月完工通車，全長 1670 公尺。由於地質關係，月光山隧道有少見的起伏坡道，頗為特殊。此外，月光山隧道縮短了美濃鎮與杉林鄉兩地之間的距離，方便遊客可直接從美濃通過月光山隧道前往甲仙、六龜、南橫等地方。
